Unit 10: Classification Systems. Bacteria and Viruses.
Reading
BJU Biology: Ch. 9 "The Classification of Organisms" and Ch. 10 "Bacteria and Viruses"
AP Classroom: We will continue with Unit 7 and start Unit 8.
Lab
What are we learning here?
Classification is the systematic organization of living things into groups. We will learn the 3-Domain, 6-Kingdom system of taxonomy.
Viruses are not considered "living". They have no cell membrane, or internal organelles; and they do not divide. Instead, they invade a host cell, inject their DNA or RNA, and take over the machinery of the host cell to make copies of themselves. Viruses infect all types of organisms - animals, plants, bacteria, etc.
Bacteria are living, single-celled organisms, about 1/1000ths the size of a human cell, but huge compared to viruses! All bacteria are prokaryotes (no nucleus, no organelles, divide by binary fission), but they are divided into two kingdoms - Archaebacteria and Eubacteria.

Infectious Disease presentation
"Research an infectious disease of your choice, and any drugs under development to treat it".
Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms — such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. You can present an infectious disease that effects animals OR plants. There are too many examples to list! You can start by searching "infectious disease examples".
You will present a 4-5 minute PowerPoint, Prezi, or pre-recorded video at an upcoming class.
