Policies
It has been my honor and privilege to teach and mentor hundreds of hard-working and dedicated students, and have been able to write dozens of reference letters for students pursuing exciting careers, as well as colleges and trade school programs. With that in mind, all classes and lab sessions will adhere to high standards of business and civility. This is not babysitting, and students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, businesslike fashion (this includes webinars):
  • Show respect and consideration for others
  • Take responsibility for personal actions
  • Practice polite communication and patience with others
  • Exercise good manners and interact in a polite, considerate manner

Webinars
Conduct yourself in the same manner as a live classroom (see above). People are trying to learn, and the teacher is trying to teach.
  • Be on time
  • Keep your discussions on topic
  • Be polite and respectful of other students and the teacher
  • Do not post GIF's or other distracting images
  • Do not carry on distracting conversations which don't pertain to the class
  • Students violating these policies will be removed from the webinar. After 3 violations you will be removed from the class. There will not be a refund.

Course Requirements:
  • Attend the classes (including both in-person and webinar sessions). Be on time.
  • Skim the assigned chapter before attending class or webinar.
  • Take notes and ask relevant questions during the lectures.
  • Participate in the class labs.
  • Turn in your work by the due date. Unless instructed to work as a team, do your own work.
  • Don’t fall behind in your work. Do not procrastinate!

Grades:
  • Refer to your 2-page Course Description for the 'grading elements' and 'grading scale' applicable to each class. The course descriptions are posted on the home page.

Makeup policy:
  • Making up in-person labs is hard to do when you don't have a fully-stocked laboratory at home, and I can't record live webinar lectures due to privacy. It is your responsibility to schedule your own time to be able to attend the webinar sessions. If you miss an in-person lab, a suitable WebLab may be available for makeup work - but there is no guarantee.

Homework re-work:
  • You need to turn in your homework to Canvas by the due date! DON'T SLACK OFF. Late homework will have points deducted, depending on how late it is. In rare circumstances, I will allow "rework" of a botched homework assignment where you have turned in the original on-time and otherwise completed it in good faith.

Behavior code:
  • Regular, punctual attendance.
  • Positive participation in class discussion, labs, and projects.
  • Abide by the Lab Safety Rules at all times.
  • No physical and/or verbal abuse/harassment.
  • No hats, hoods, or headgear in class or lab sessions.
  • Lab safety: long hair must be gathered, and safety glasses are required. See Lab Safety Rules.
  • No food allowed in class or lab sessions.
  • Students to wear clothing that is appropriate to the business of learning and not a distraction to other students.
  • Electronic Devices: Personal electronic devices such as smart phones, cell phones, and personal gaming devices are not allowed in class, because they show disrespect and they distract people. Personal laptops which are being used for note-taking purposes are welcome and encouraged.
  • No verbal threats, hostile acts, or weapons are allowed anywhere on the property/premises.
  • No tobacco or drugs on the premises.
Academic Integrity:
  • You are expected to exercise the highest moral and ethical standards. Acts of academic and personal dishonesty will not be tolerated.
  • NO CHEATING/COPYING — Do not share your work with others or copy another student's work without express permission of the teacher (sometimes I will allow partnering on lab reports, but I will always announce it beforehand). I CAN TELL IN 30 SECONDS if you have copied other's work. You can BOTH be removed from the class with no refund.
  • Fabrication— Do not falsify or invent data, or use fake citations or other authorities in a homework or lab assignment.
  • NO PLAGIARISM — The use of another's ideas, words, or work as one's own is not allowed. I CAN USUALLY TELL IN 30 SECONDS if you have plagiarized someone else's work, and I HAVE AN "APP" that can tell exactly how many words are plagiarized and where you got them. EXCEPTION: small portions of another's work - such as individual sentences or phrases or short paragraphs - may be incorporated into your work, as long as PROPER CITATION is given. COPY-AND-PASTE of another's work is not allowed.
  • Theft — The willful & unauthorized taking, use, concealment, or alteration of other's property or materials is not allowed.

Consequences:
  • Willful, deliberate behavior which involves verbal abuse, the potential for serious bodily injury to self or others, academic/personal dishonesty, or theft, may result in immediate expulsion from the course without warning. There will not be a refund.
Lab Safety Rules & Assumption of Risk and Medical Release:
  • This is a requirement for every student participating in the in-person labs. The forms are posted above.

Class Fees/Refund Policy:
  • Refer to the "Class Fees" tab
