Fallingwater research assignment
‘Fallingwater’ is perhaps the most photographed house in the world. It was designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright at the height of his genius, and is one of his masterpieces. It is built directly over a beautiful waterfall in western Pennsylvania.
Unknown to many, Fallingwater has had structural problems from the day it was completed. Apparently, the huge concrete beams which hold up the cantilevered main terrace and living room were under-reinforced – in other words they did not have enough steel reinforcing, or “rebar” placed in them. As a consequence, the heavy cantilevered structure started sagging as much as 7 inches – you can actually see it sagging in pictures. About 10 years ago, the state of Pennsylvania undertook to fix the problem.
Your assignment: research how Fallingwater’s cantilevered structure was fixed. Then write a professional 2-page summary including 1) a description of the problem, and 2) how it was fixed from an engineering standpoint. Be specific. Suitable pictures or diagrams count towards the 1-2 page requirement. Use an appropriate title and heading on your report, and make it look professional! Turn-in your completed paper as an email attachment. You can find lots of information for this research assignment if you search “Fallingwater restoration” or “saving Fallingwater”.
