  • Electronegativity

Labs
Memo: 2020-2021 labs will include hands-on and virtual, and may vary as the Covid-19 situation changes.
Here is a list of possible labs for this lesson. I will choose from this list when we get here.
  • The "Hydrogen gas lab" is our regular lab, but there are numerous virtual labs which cover the topics well. There are also labs you can do at home. We'll decide when we get here.
Hands-on labs you could do at home with supervision:
  • With proper supervision, you could do the Hydrogen lab at home on a small scale (never make more than 1 small test tube of hydrogen at any time). There is also an excellent graphing-type lab which illustrates periodic trends.
Virtual labs which pertain to the topics covered:
  • The periodic trends "graphing" lab is the best one

Lecture outline:
  • The periodic table and its historic development
  • Atomic radius, ionic radius
  • Electron affinity, ionization energy, and electronegativity
  • Overview of the main groups on the periodic table
Hydrogen lab
We will make and test hydrogen gas. A classic lab exercise in making and collecting this important gas, and testing it under different conditions.

Spacecraft CO2 Removal assignment
Research the following and submit a 1-1/2 to 2 page report – “How is carbon dioxide gas – which is exhaled by humans - eliminated from a spacecraft? How do they prevent it from building up and poisoning the astronauts?"
  1. Describe the system used
  2. Write the chemical reaction(s) taking place, using the proper symbols
  3. Include sketches, diagrams and any relevant pictures
